About me
Candice Frontiera supports the Kailua-Kalaheo Complex Area district team in serving 14 schools with 6,212 students total on the Windward side of Oahu. She has since scaled that deep teacher learning model at her school and across other elementary schools over the years with a focus on current research from leaders in the field such as Dr. Boaler and Dr. Liljedahl. In 2018, Hawaii Math Lab Cohort Team from Maunawili Elementary School won the Shirley Hord Teacher Learning Team Award. The annual award, named for Learning Forward Scholar Laureate Shirley Hord and sponsored by Corwin, honors a school-based team that successfully implements a teacher-led cycle of continuous improvement. "What sets this team apart is the intentionality of their learning," said Learning Forward Executive Director Stephanie Hirsh. "Their intentional study, goal setting, sharing of practices, observation and feedback, their use of data, and their collective responsibility for their own learning and their students' learning, this team exemplifies the learning that leads to improved teaching and increased student results.” For the last two school years our Hawaii Lab Cohort has been focused on unpacking the 14 Building Thinking Classroom practices both at Maunawili and across other elementary schools in our area. With the help of amazing teacher leaders like Kathleen Trifonovitch, Maunawili Elementary was recently awarded the prestigious distinction as a Blue Ribbon School for elevating the outcomes of a diverse student population. Kathleen is our state finalist for the Presidential Award for Mathematics because she is the type of reflective teacher who is always evolving her craft in way that has a ripple of effect beyond her classroom.
